Students 2

An unemployed ship's carpenter from Leith by the name of Tom Whalen wandered into one of Carrick's evening classes at the college after having spent years whittling away on bits of scrap wood. It was Carrick who recognised and nurtured an outstanding talent, becoming Whalen's guide and mentor, giving him studio space and nominating him for commissions whenever the opportunity arose.

Below - an old photocopied picture of Carrick inspecting one of Whalen's works at an R.S.A. Exhibition. Tom Whalen is on the far left, and the lady is Carrick's daughter Elizabeth.

Note - I have been unsuccesful in aquiring photographs of Whalen's works from the Scottish Galleries. Donations of photographs would be gratefully received!
