Every artists has a true medium and for Carrick this was freestone. In the aftershock of WWI with so many of the old certainties destroyed I think Carrick seems to have drawn on the vocabulary of the ancient and primitive monuments of Scotland's earliest pre-history, adopting and adapting to create something which combined powerful contemporary images and emotions with deeper cultural roots, finding comfort and re-assurance in the linking of an uncertain present with our most ancient past.
