King Robert the Bruce (right) and Sir William Wallace (left).
Despite the controversy that surrounded the Edinburgh Castle commission Carrick's original designs for Wallace and Bruce were actually later realised in the form of small bronze statuettes , cast from his original models, for a commission from the University of Pittsburgh for the Scottish Classroom in the University's newly built 'Cathedral of Learning' in 1938. The figures stand on the mantlepiece flanking a copy of Raeburn's portrait of Robert Burns.
Alex Carrick had a fine deep voice and loved to sing Burns' songs when in the company of friends.
