The use of such shallow relief which brings out the rich patina of the bronze is also reminiscent of a medal, an idea re-enforced by the stong profiles of the lower left soldiers. This was a special branch of the sculptor's art in which Carrick was interested and his subtle adoption of the traditional military and commemorative iconography of the medal charges the panel with yet a further layer of meaning.
