Classical symmetry

Full sized view

Right - The beautifully balanced figure of Justice executed for the carved pediment of the Sheriff Court Building in the Royal Mile, Edinburgh, completed 1936.

Working within the confines of the architectural space Carrick abandoned the traditional portrayal of Blind Justice holding sword and scales in outstretched hands. Instead the sword has become the central focus of the work while the perfect balancing of her stylised scales is subtly re-enforced by the symmetry of the sculpture itself.
