The Crucible, World War I

In 1916 Carrick, recently married and now a father, joined the Royal Garrison Artillery and served on the Western Front. As an ordinary gunner he experienced the war at first hand, He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scotish Academy while still at the front in 1918 and his sketch book from this year still survives.
